What this site is
Best State to Retire In provides free online calculators, comparison tools, and state guides to help retirees and near-retirees understand how state taxes, property taxes, everyday costs, weather, and healthcare access differ from state to state. The site is provided for general information and education only.
Estimates — not advice
Every number on this site is an estimate. Our tools use 2026 state rules and statewide averages — average effective property tax rates, average combined sales tax rates, and typical effective income tax rates for retiree income levels. Your actual taxes and costs depend on your full situation: your exact income and its sources, your county and city, the home you buy, available exemptions and credits, and future changes in the law.
Nothing on this site is tax, legal, financial, or investment advice, and using this site does not create an advisor, accountant, attorney, or fiduciary relationship with us. Before making a decision about where to live or how to structure your retirement, talk with a qualified tax professional or financial advisor who knows your situation.
Accuracy
We build our data from public sources — state tax authorities, the Tax Foundation, the U.S. Census Bureau, and NOAA climate data — and we work to keep it current. Even so, we can't guarantee that every figure is complete, current, or free of error. Tax rules change, sometimes mid-year. If you spot something that looks wrong, we'd genuinely like to hear about it at contact@beststatetoretirein.com.
Using the site
